timeline display and environmental graphics
Client: Bay Area Air Quality Management District
Role: Art Director · Designer
Scope: Exhibition display, environmental graphics for the District’s new headquarters
The Bay Area Air Quality Management District recently moved into a new headquarters in San Francisco. The project involved designing a timeline display and environmental graphics to help visitors understand the agency’s long history, its key laws and regulations, and its ongoing role in improving air quality and public health.
Approach:
My design strategy focused on bringing a complex subject—air quality regulation—into an accessible and visually engaging narrative. By structuring the timeline display into clear chronological segments, each milestone is paired with compelling visuals and informative graphics that illustrate the agency’s accomplishments. The environmental graphics extend the narrative into the space, tying together form, function and message.
Result:
-
A large-scale, informative timeline wall that guides visitors through decades of regulatory history and impact.
-
Environmental graphics that blend seamlessly into the space, reinforcing the message of ambient air quality as a shared public good.
-
An experience that is both educational and visually coherent, helping the District communicate its mission clearly to a diverse audience.
Key Takeaways:
-
Translating institutional history into a visual narrative helps engage non-specialist audiences.
-
Environmental graphics must respect spatial context while also reinforcing brand messaging.
-
Clear chronology + visual design = stronger retention of information for visitors.
